Across New Mexico there are abandoned properties that are contaminated enough to make them unusable, but not contaminated enough to warrant federal intervention. We know that these properties are often in low income areas where hazards were placed on purpose. People won’t complain there, the logic went. Today, in New Mexico, these sites are a call for intervention, clean up, and repurposing for housing. We’re still learning how we can help, but work is underway to identify and inventory the contaminated properties. We need a fund to continue this work. You can see more here.
